We sited the vegetable plots in a fenced-off area at the top of the garden which drains beautifully. I'm sure it must previously have been a vegetable area. There's an outdoor tap nearby making watering straightforward and, since we have our own non-mains water source, plant watering is also free-a huge boon in the summer months! We've tried growing lots of things-potatoes, pumpkins, and courgettes have given particularly bumper crops. It does take some work-but there are few more satisfying places to be on a summers day... this would be a fantastic place for a self-sufficiency enthusiast...

The Vegetable Plot
We were both complete novices at vegetable growing. Here, that really hasn't been an issue...the ground is so moist and rich that, once dug, it looks just like chocolate cake mix, and I'm told it's so fertile that there's no need to add extra fertiliser-I certainly never have.
